The invention of the internet has dramatically changed our world. It has opened many new forms of communication. Over the past few years teens have begun moving from talking on land phones to cell phones, from snail mail to e-mail, from phone calls to text messaging, from hanging out to blogging.
There are typically two responses to something new: 1) total amazement and excitement, or 2) complete distrust and antagonism. Most students today would be placed in the first category of excitement when it comes to blogs and myspace accounts. Parents are nervous and skeptical, and rightly so, of this virtual world. Remember that with every product and issue there is always a good side and always a bad side.
Here are a few frequently asked questions:
A blog (short for web log) is an opportunity to interact with other people through writing, asking questions, and journaling. Typically a blog is for a particular interest group where they can interact on certain issues.
Myspace is a virtual community where people connect with each other. Each person is allowed to custom make their own web page that reveals personal information, displays pictures, and allows for comments and interaction.
No. The information put on an individual's page reflects them and is not monitored by an outside source. So whatever material or content a person desires to display is fair game. At this point we recommend extreme caution and discretion.
